STRN6 INTERVIEW

CRYSTAL 77

Why did you choose sculpture as an art medium?

Sculptures dominate and rightfully occupy the already crowded human living space. Its physical presence and the ability to feel its volumes with the body allow for a better perception of art. Also I can always experiment with new materials, which keeps me generating fresh ideas.

What are the main motives of your oeuvre?

I want to explore the spiritual world. Drawing from China's rich cultural heritage, I interpret its concepts to engage with profound questions about existence, connection, and transcendence in today's context.

Who is your favourite sculptor and why?

Lishun has his own unique language of artistic expression, capturing the essence of his subjects in a dynamic and fluid manner and conveying emotion and depth. I like how he explores the interplay between tradition and innovation, bridging the gap between classical Chinese aesthetics and contemporary art.

What do you want to convey to the viewer through your sculptures?

I always think about the meaning of life and try to express these illusions in the medium of objective existence. The curiosity about the unknown, imagination of the supernatural inspires me to understand the world and its senses.

How is your personality reflected in your art?

My works reflect my thoughts and spiritual outlook. I think art goes beyond mere expressions of love or criticism; rather, it is a representation of a conditioned perspective and the absence of a distinct "self."

With  "not Self" I mean that all artistic creations are free of an isolated identity and are interconnected with various influences and experiences. Art is a reflection of my inner world and the broader context in which I exist.

What role would you like to play in the development of sculpture?

Sculpture is an art related to the existence and cognition of life, on which we project the anxiety and instinctive fear brought about by the death of the body. I hope that my works have some possibility to  transcend the limitations of time and mortality. Trough the medium of sculpture I have an opportunity to touch eternity and explore human existence simultaneously. As they capture the moment , it is like a stone in the river of time.
